The village of Qaim Din Solangi in the remote Khairpur district in Sindh province, Pakistan now has a new, one-room schoolhouse — thanks to the Student Action Club at Soundview. The Soundview students raised over $1,400 to build the schoolroom and sponsor a student to attend. The school — Sojero Junior School — will serve 24 students between the ages of five and nine. In an area of the world where girls are often denied an education, the all-girl school enrolls children in kindergarten, first and second grades. The project was carried out under the auspices of the non-profit Developments in Literacy (DIL) of Long Beach, California. DIL, whose mission is to bring literacy to Pakistan, especially to girls, works with local communities and non-governmental organizations to build schools, hire teachers and subsidize students. They have constructed and maintain 200 schools all over the country. The Student Action Coalition also sponsored a student to attend school for five years. After graduating from Junior School, students enter a regional DIL Model School, with transportation arranged by the agency. The Student Action Club is devoted to examining human rights and environmental issues around the world, and taking action to alleviate conditions where it is possible. In addition to this project, the Club collected food for a local food pantry and collected books to be transported to a fledgling school in Cambodia, |
