The Language Club meets every other week with Mrs. Viale serving as advisor. Students joining the club generally take one of the four languages offered by Soundview - Latin, Italian, Spanish or French. The club’s aim is to give students a broader understanding of the Romance languages and their cultures as well as an overview of languages they do not study. At club meetings, students give reports on such topics as cheese making, wine culture and olives. Every November, the Club holds a harvest celebration: piles of baguettes and Italian bread, green and black olives, French and Italian cheeses, prosciutto and Italian sausages greet the students thronging into Mrs. Circosta’s room. December activities include learning about Christmas in France and the Italian tradition of Befana, as well as enjoying a Buche de Noel and other pastries popular in Europe during the holiday season. Iin addition to local trips to New York to partake of the many cultural groups there represented, the Language Club sponsors an annual trip abroad. In 2008, the group travelled to Argentina to soak up the culture, history and some sun! Click for more information about the school’s trips. Language Week, sponsored by the Language Club, takes place each year in May. Presentations at morning meetings include dialogues and readings, reports on authors and poets past and present, discussions on language roots and Indo-European derivations. |
