Day of Service

On Friday Oct 18, 2013 the entire SPS community participated in our first annual Day of Service at the Food Bank for Westchester in Elmsford NY. Our students and faculty learned about the distribution of food from this facility to all foodbanks throughout Westchester County. Typically, corporate partners donate foods in bulk quantity and volunteers prepare bagged quantities for individual distribution. In addition, the Food Bank orchestrates the Children’s Backpack Program where students who qualify for the subsidized lunch program receive a backpack filled with food for the weekend at home. We learned that the backpacks contain fresh fruit, rice, beans and other staples. While at the Food Bank, we had a tour of the facility, including the room sized freezers already filled with turkeys for the holidays. We then prepared 8 lb bags of apples from large bins of apples donated from the local apple orchards. Students learned how to follow “clean procedures” in the preparation and handling of food.
