Soundview’s Middle School program, for students in grades 6–8, addresses the developmental needs of younger students by fostering social and intellectual growth in an atmosphere that respects emerging adolescence. Middle School students enjoy a homebase in their own building on campus that provides a warmer, more nurturing setting. Our curriculum is designed to establish a foundation of knowledge and skills in each major academic area and to promote good study skills, organization and work habits.
The Middle School academic program emphasizes reading and writing across all subject areas, which include language arts and literature, history, mathematics, science, foreign language, computer skills, physical education and the arts. Students are encouraged to become engaged learners by working on individual oral and written assignments, group projects and interdisciplinary explorations, all designed to develop individual responsibility and classroom cooperation. Arts performances and class activities promote a feeling of belonging. Highlights of the year are the fall Middle School trip, a fun-filled overnight excursion that offers students the opportunity to get to know one another in a relaxed setting, the Science Fair, in which students exhibit their independent research projects, and the end-of-the-year picnic, complete with games, crafts and delicious food. At Soundview, we provide Middle School students with opportunities to build self-confidence and a healthy self-image.
