College Counseling
Soundview is fortunate to have as our College Counselor Carol Gill, a certified educational planner and president of Carol Gill Associates, a leading educational consulting firm in Westchester. Our college placement program begins early in the Upper School, when students and their families are advised how to plan for college-what courses they need to take, what activities they might wish to include, when to begin visiting colleges.
The process intensifies in the fall of junior year, when Ms. Gill meets with all juniors and their parents to discuss the tasks that lie ahead in choosing a college and preparing applications. Ms. Gill then meets with families individually to customize the process, and, throughout the first semester of the senior year, she meets with each senior several times to provide advice and check that deadlines are being met. The faculty and Head of School are available for assistance in writing required essays.
Admissions officers from 18 colleges visited Soundview this fall to speak with juniors and seniors. They included such colleges as Bard, Dickinson, Emerson, Franklin & Marshall, Gettysburg, Goucher, Hartwick, Roger Williams, Skidmore and Wheaton. After listening to the college representative’s presentations, students had the opportunity to ask questions, and in some cases, to have a personal interview.
The school sends transcripts, an official school letter, and teacher recommendations to each college. Ms. Gill makes personal contact with each college on behalf of the student and this follow-up continues for several months until a student is placed.
Throughout the college planning process at Soundview, the key factor is personalized attention with a strong emphasis on making the right match between student and college. The school is proud of its record of college placement.
