Middle School

Soundview’s Middle School program, for students in Grades 6-8, addresses the developmental needs of early adolescents by providing social and intellectual growth in an atmosphere that respects the emerging adolescent. The academic program emphasizes reading and writing and includes the study of language arts and literature, history and the social sciences, introduction to foreign language, mathematics, science, computer skills, physical education, and the arts. Students are encouraged to become engaged learners by working on individual oral and written assignments, group projects, and interdisciplinary explorations, all designed to foster the development of academic discipline and classroom cooperation.

A sense of community is important to the Middle School program. Advisor groups, arts performances, and class activities promote a feeling of belonging. Working cooperatively, students develop an understanding of the need for patience and the value of hard work. The Middle School program builds self-confidence and a healthy self-image with a variety of opportunities for student success and growth.

The Annual Middle School Science Fair provides students the opportunity to design mazes to stump hamsters, create devices powered by solar cells, or demonstrate the effects of environmental pollution on aquatic plants. From choosing a project to researching the selection, to writing up the finished product, every middle schooler participates with ample guidance from Middle and Upper School science teachers.
