Students in Soundview Prep’s Art program pursue creative projects in drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture intended to stimulate their creative imaginations by generating powerful experiences of knowing and feeling. Projects follow both traditional and representational methods of working based in direct observation of the visual world, such as still-life, portraiture and landscape as well as conceptual, non-objective and imaginary methods of working, giving equal value to outer and inner realities. All projects are intended to develop students’ sensitivity, perceptual skills, coordination, sense of the materials and techniques of the visual arts, and confidence in their expressive capabilities. Throughout the course the elements of the visual language (space, shape, line, color, texture and the principles of composition) are emphasized. Exemplary works from historical and contemporary artists may be studied for guidance and inspiration.
