Academics

Soundview’s academic program includes a traditional, college preparatory curriculum featuring a commitment to take any student as far as he is capable of progressing in any subject. Therefore, the spectrum of courses may vary from year to year as particular students progress beyond the Advanced Placement level of a subject or, in a field such as technology, demonstrate proficiency at a level that prompts us to find an “outside” expert in the field.

In every grade, reading closely and writing effectively are stressed, so the program in general is designed to build strong comprehension and communication skills. Students are placed by level of competency as well as by grade, and plans for graduating designed accordingly.

Basic graduation requirements are listed on a separate page, but these requirements do not fully depict the increasingly broad range of courses offered to respond to students’ needs and interests and to provide them choices. The English program includes elective expository and creative writing courses as well as options in the literature curriculum. Both the math and the science programs hold options at certain levels. In foreign language, we offer the choice of French, Italian, Latin, and Spanish on whatever level is appropriate. We have an outstanding art program encompassing sixth through twelfth grades and including Art History. AP courses are taught in subjects in which students demonstrate capacity. Soundview offers a diverse range of elective courses.

Despite being a small school, then, Soundview has developed a broad curriculum designed to provide a thorough grounding for college as well as numerous opportunities for enrichment. Our intense commitment to responding to individual students means that we supplement this program in any way necessary and possible to take students as far as they can reach before they graduate.
